A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
